As far as a DJ is concerned, hearing his work yourself in a similar enviroment as to where you’d like to book him is the best thing you can do. Either that a personal recommendation from a friend/relative is usually pretty excellent too.
Look at his wedsite and see the privious weddings that he has done.Look at the lighting, the way he announces, his playlist, make sure he signs a contract.
As the previous poster confirmed, try to go see the DJ in action. Also, referrals from others is a plus. One thing that is really beneficial these days is a DJ that works from a computer database of songs and can link to the web to get any song that is requested. Any DJ that says "sorry I don’t have that" is not worth the price you pay.
a.)
Make sure that the DJ has at least 2 *wireless* mics. And make sure that the mics have multi frequency capability. I attended a dance where another party’s wireless mic interfered with our party!! Not excellent!
b.)
Also, the wireless mic should have diversity capability. It minimizes dropouts as the user is moving around the room.
c.)
See if the DJ’s system also has a subwoofer… This only applies if you want chest thumping music.
