Be absolutely sure that the DJ realizes that he works for you and not the other way around.
At your wedding, you want the DJ to play the music YOU want. Too many DJ’s are not in tune with their audience and play music that is well loved on the radio or in the clubs, but may not be relevant to the wedding and it’s guests. If you want the "Bird Dance", get the bird dance. If you want only People music, be sure that the DJ has the people music you want. Don’t just leave it up to the DJ because he’s the ‘professional’. It’s YOUR wedding.
Make sure he has DJ at weddings before and he is familiar with the reception format. A fantastic DJ at the club isn’t always apt at a wedding. The DJ should have personality, lighting, diverse music collection, and an open mind.
Is he reccomended? Mine was on the perfered venders list from my location. That way, it’s obvious he’s done weddings before & is in excellent standing with my location. Next thing is price for what I’m getting…when do they start & stop playing music & how much extra time is. Of course, I also want to make sure the DJ will listen to me. If I don’t want a touch played, it doesn’t get played.
Price and personality.
Also if you are going to get that actual dj. My Friend booked with a company and you basically got whom ever….. her DJ was a rude smart ass and made smart ass comments to everyone who requested a song. He was very nasty and a completely jerk. He even dropped his keys and I found them and he was really nasty to to when I returned them…. "because I question if he could please annocence someone lost their keys" … he graped them out of my hand and was really snotty about it. And won’t tell me they were his!!
Make sure he/she is willing to meet with you beforehand a couple of times to get a list of both "must haves" and "must nots". A excellent DJ will look at your must haves and say, "I see you really like this…this artist is pretty similar…do you have any issues about this (second) artist?" On the opposite end, "I see you don’t want the chicken dance, but you didn’t say anything about the hokey pokey, should that also be on your "not" list?" Also, find out what his/her policy is for requesting songs. I know it’s hard to believe, especially with wedding djs, but I once attended a wedding where the DJ refused to play the guests requests. Attire is also up there…there are many DJs in my area that only wear tuxes to their jobs. (And the women ones wear tasteful affair suits.) You don’t want a DJ for your wedding dressing like Eminem.
Personality, and that depends on whether or not you want someone who will get your party started and get everyone dancing like a fool, OR someone who will just blend into the crowd. A excellent DJ can really make a wedding become a party.
reccomendations from several of his previous clients. If he can’t give you anyone to speak with personally, then he doubtless isn’t such a excellent choice! Also, you could question to go to an event he is working before you choose to use him for yours. If he has nothing to hide and is proud of his work, then he should have any problems with either request!
And when language with previous clients you can find out a TON of information: how were his prices, was he felxible, did he follow your wants and don’t wants, how did he get along with guests, music availablility, etc! You can find out alot of useful info from any of his previous clients!
YOU HAVE TO MAKE SURE THAT THE MUSIC APPEALS TO YOU,THE WEDDING PARTY,THE GUEST AND ANY CHILDREN THAT WILL BE PRESENT AND MAKE SURE HE IS REASONABLE. YOU CAN ASK FOR SAMPLES OF THE DJ’S MUSIC TO SEE IF YOU LIKE IT.
Question if he has a wide range of musci from 50’s aptly up to bestow day!
Hear samples of his work - don’t pick one who will talk over songs - some really like the sound of their own voice!!!
He should be open to requests, like you could give him a list of your favourite songs before the wedding.
Here’s an thought….give him yours and your new husband’s favourite top ten songs and have him play them at 10pm.
Call it your - TOP TEN AT 10 !!!!

Song selection, price, and their professionalism. Be sure to question around for opinions and question for a list of references.
question him for references for other weddings he has done. I would want one with a fun personality and one that is open to the music you would like.

get referrals - names of couples he has dj-ed for recently, and contact them to see if they were satisfied.
