If you are really broke, you may want to give it some time before you plot a wedding. You are going to need SOME money. No money will get you no wedding. Start saving money where you can, and hopefully you will have enough for a small wedding…Don't expect anything huge.
It will be time consuming but make your own flower preparations. Question people to bring certain finger foods and make your wedding intimate but small. Have your wedding earlier 1:00 or so instead of later when people expect heavier food and more elaborate ceremony. If you had an afternoon wedding and it was in the spring or summer and you know someone with a nice yard or a pretty lake setting where it wouldn't cost anything for the site. At my second wedding all the people I invited (about 25) brought a dish for the reception. I had it on the patio of my mom and dads. I did wear a wedding dress and everyone dressed nice and it was just perfect.
If you just don't have much money at all my sister got married at the incite house with all of the family there and we dressed up, she had a boquet of flowers, a nice sunday dress, he wore a suit, we had a photographer. It only cost about 200.00 adn the entire family went out to eat afterwards which was the "reception".
Well, we are not rich either.. and even even if my parents are paying for the entire wedding..
I found a really excellent thought (i believe) and i used two of those Chock Full o' Nuts (coffee cans) cans and sealed them with lots of tape, made a hole on each one at the top and gave one to my fiancee while i kept the other…
I told him to place in every penny and change that's left from his day, and he thought it was a fantastic thought, he says he's even place bills in it and i have too…
You can make your own invitations. You control the paper choices and what they will look like. Try: http://www.do-it-yourself-invitations.com for thoughts.
You can make your own decorations and centerpieces. Research wholesale stores for thoughts.
Watch for sales at marriage stores on dresses. Also, if you know a seamstress have your dress made for you.
Order free catalogs online. You can get thoughts from there and use it to compare prices. A excellent one is Ann's Marriage Bargains. The prices are very reasonable on all of the items.
For the reception, you can hire a friend to make the menu and make the food. This way you control how much is bought and the quality of the food.
For the cake, you can buy a two or three tier wedding cake from a supermarket and a large sheet cake for the guests.
If you want fresh flowers check wholesalers online. Also choose flowers that are in season of your wedding.
You can make your own bouquet and centerpieces if you buy wholesale.
Excellent luck and congratulations.
Here's what I can suggest….
No 1:
Every week, stash some $$ out of your paycheck into a savings account (whether at a bank or in your sock drawer he he)
No 2:
Do a lot of "do it yourself" things…
~Make your own invitations (My future mother in law got our invitations reduced from JoAnn fabrics… They are plain, but it's small sacrifices like these that will help you cut costs)
~Make your own bouquets by using fake flowers… Some look really realistic
And the list just goes on…
No 3:
Look to your family for any help at all possible…
- Have a family member take your photos instead of a pricey photographer
- If anyone can bake, have them make your wedding cake.
- If you can't or choose not to do your own hair/make up/nails, question a friend/family member that you trust.
No 4:
Look for a used wedding dress (they are only worn once, and dry cleaned… You can get a fantastic deal), or go to David's Marriage $100 sale, or look at websites, such as JCPenny, and look at their gowns. They are honestly cheap and still gorgeous.
And the list can keep going… If your fiancee has a suit, maybe use that instead of renting a tux…
It can go a long way if you are flexible.
Hope some of this helps!!
There are lots of things you can do.
#1 you really have to prioritize
You CAN NOT have everything and anything. That's #1 Because of course if you want everything. Because everything cost money.
*Now you can do a lot of DIY (Do it yourself) things.
If you go to Michaels or Michaels.com (the store has more to choose from) They have very gorgeous wedding invitations that you can print off yourself. Many of them are better than those in the catalogs.
*Use Silk plants- they are gorgeous as well. Make your own plants, They are not that hard and you can also buy those things at Michaels.
*Go to marriage shows- I really just went to one yesterday. There are many thoughts there and lots of discounts (i got a $100 gift certificate from Davids marriage). I also won a wedding cake knife and server This set retails at $69.99.
* Have someone make your wedding dress, or you can even order off of ebay.
*If you have someone who bakes cakes in your family, see if they can make your wedding cake maybe as a marriage gift for you and your husband to be.
*DJ- make your own music, Have a family member or friend be your DJ, A friend of mine had lots and lots of songs loaded onto her laptop and had a family member play the songs she wanted, just hooked it up to lots of pro. Speakers.
*Have an Adult only reception. Or have an early wedding. Where at the reception you can supply small finger foods. Or try to find a reception site who allows you to bring in your own food.
*Find a photographer who has a set rate. Not one who charger per hour or per shot. This may be a small hard to find but THEY ARE OUT THERE. I know a few where I live (Columbus, OH) do this. One charges $450 edits, and touch ups everything she does, and place’s it on a disk then gives you rights to print them yourself. Or go to your local community college and question a photography student to shoot your weding. Lots of people do this and the kids like it! (Also try this for your wedding cake)
If you need anything else let me know. I have many other ways to save!!!
As odd as it may sound, you can save a lot of money by shopping around and letting pros handle certain things. For example, a lot of couples try to save on invitations by printing them themselves. Honestly these usually look cheap. As a former press operator, I can tell you that invitations are much less expensive for much higher quality when dealing with a company that specializes in such things. One example would be http://www.e-weddingfavors.com.....-51-1.html.
You can also find some nice wedding favors cheaper than many you could make yourself at http://www.e-weddingfavors.com.....-26-1.html. These are just a couple of examples.
