You can join strips of fondant together. I like to do it by gluing them side by side on another sheet of fondant. You can use water or vodka for the glue, or a small bit of meringue powder mixed with water (you can use egg white but not if someone is going to eat it). There’s a tool called an herb mincer that’s fantastic for cutting narrow, even strips of fondant. I bought one at Target for $6. I used it for the white strips on the bottom tier of this cake: http://darkmindseye.deviantart.....e-95851049 It would be excellent for making the contrasting colors in your checkered, because you wouldn’t have to try measuring very narrow strips and cutting them evenly with just a ruler.
You can roll over your drape with a rolling pin, but if you have areas that are thicker than the others, like strips laid over a main color, they may spread unevenly. I reckon it would doubtless work best to cut strips of the main color and then narrow strips of your stripe colors and lay them side by side on a larger sheet of fondant, using meringue powder/water as glue, then very lightly roll over it one time to join them together. If you roll it too much, it will get distorted.
If you choose to use a pasta machine, you can usually find them at Ross for about $15. I have one but it hasn’t been very useful at all for my fondant work…I spend more time trying to get it unstuck from the machine than it’s worth (it’s fantastic for rolling out sheets of bubble gum to make bubble gum roses for kids’ cakes even if), and I get better consequences just rolling the fondant with a nonstick rolling pin on a silicone mat, or even on a huge sheet of smooth, clear vinyl…which is really a excellent thought, if you need a very long fondant drape, because you can buy the vinyl at Walmart for about $3 a yard, and it’s wide enough that you wouldn’t have to buy very much of it, and then you wouldn’t have to let part of your drape hang off your mat while working on another part.
i reckon you are going to have to do some experimenting. Some trial and error. Consider using a hand crank pasta machine to get a nice even feel. Try rolling our some of each color and then jig saw puzzle it together like a weave. Try it without water to glue it together and then try it with a small water or eggwhite to help glue it together but then use plenty of corn starch to keep that moisture from being sticky in your pasta machine. Roll some out and see what happens. You might find that it is better to hand roll "snakes" of each color, some thicker and some thinner and then weave them and place them owing to the pasta machine or roll them by hand with a rolling pin. Honestly I reckon this is a huge undertaking. You might also conduct experiment with just rolling a sheet of the main color and using food coloring, a ruler and a steady hand to make the rest of your checkered. Goodluck!
Hi, you might want to watch this video by Aine2 on Youtube titled "How to make a tartan pattern on fondant". But that is shown on a smaller piece of fondant. Hope this helps. Excellent luck Glamoursuits !
