My advice is also to not skimp on this aspect of your wedding. Unfortunately, today with the proliferation of digital cameras, many people consider themselves "photographers", and I have seen the pitiful consequences of their work, and the brides who always unhappiness it later. So do yourself a favor and quest out pro photographers who can meet with you and show you samples of their work. You may very well find a student or someone just starting out in the affair, and they may really be able to acheive some excellent photos, but there is another aspect that is often overlooked…. which is what is done with the photos AFTER the wedding. Professionals have working relationships with expert labs and album suppliers and online hosting that the amateur just will not have developed yet. So with an amateur, you will likely receive nothing more than 4 x 6 photos in a cheap pocket album, whereas with a pro, you can get a perfectly calculated flushmount album with photo collages depicting the flow of the ceremony. Plus the photos will be expertly retouched to show you at your best. Also, perfectly rendered DVD slideshows are a staple of the professional. So there is more to it than just getting excellent photos in the camera, what is really presented to the client is where the professional is your only choice. My two cents, but it really breaks my heart to see brides who despise the only photos they will ever have of their most special day.
Don’t go with cheap. Go with the best you can afford. Your photos will last a lifetime. Certainly get them on a cd. This is not the place to try to save money.
I wouldn’t skimp on your photos. Your wedding only lasts a day but the photos last forever! I live in Chicago and I couldn’t find a excellent photographer for under $2000. If you don’t want to pay that much I would just question a friend to do it or find a student who will do it for next to nothing.
I second the Craigslist suggestion! Be open to other types of photographers as well. Maybe a fashion or art photographer would be able to produce fantastic photos for less money. I personally found a fantastic student photographer. I was able to show her examples of the types of photography I liked and she did exactly what I wanted. I also suggest giving the photographer a "tryout" by having them take your date photos. Just make sure that it is somebody whose work you like and that you feel excellent about.
First of all, congratulations on your upcoming wedding! My husband and I recently started up our own digital event photography affair. We have photographed several weddings as well as other types of events, and have both been taking other types of photos as a leisure activity and/or a affair for years. We’ve just chose to take this full scale and try to make a affair of it, so we need to build up our portfolio. Since we are new to the affair, our rates are affordable and negotiable, and we’d be thrilled to make your special day full of lasting memories. Email me for more details! Cheap: have a friend do it.
If you want decent photos: hire a real professional and pay the price.
You get what you pay for.

Craig’s List! Look and see who’s there & negotiate on the price
