that’s a very excellent question. i’m preparation to do the same thing. I am half mexican and my husband is mexican so we want to have a mariachi for about an hour or so while we eat and then have the dj. the only thing is that the dj is my cousing so thanks to that i don’t have to worry about the pay he’s doing our wedding for free. talk to the dj and tell them your situation i bet it won’t be the first or last time they’ve had this situation.
The DJ is going to charge for the entire time he is there. Not just when he is playing.
I would suggest you hire your live band then use an Ipod to make a list of pre-recorded songs for the events and after the band foliage rather than paying for an extra DJ. The band leader should be pleased to help you out by starting the music during their intermissions.
I would say that it’s all negotiable. Some DJs may be willing to go and set up before the wedding, go home and come back a few hours later to do the music you want. The best thing to do is question a few professional DJs what they would do. A excellent place to question this question is another site that has Vendors available to answer your questions. DJ’s usually only charge you for the time they play. Set up is included in that fee. For our wedding we paid our D.J. to play from 6:30 to 11:30. They showed up two hours early to set up. It worked out fantastic because they had plenty of time to set up and have dinner while the Mariachi played.
The dj gets paid for his time, so you pay him for the time he is there.
