Depends on what part of NJ and when the event is being held. We got quotes of $1500 and up for lighting and DJ services for 8 hours in South Jersey in August. It also depends on what type of lighting you are looking for, some independent DJs have less professional equipment and some of the higher-end people offer more options for your lighting. You can really pay whatever you can afford, the highest quote we got was $12,000 for the 8 hours - but that included disco, strobe, lasers, smoke, etc. I would call around and ask about packages and pricing, tell them you don’t have a budget yet if they ask.
Good luck!
If they are asking for your budget, steer away from them. They have a package price, get it from them and several others. IF you say your budget is $1000, I am sure there minimum will be $1000.00. Call them back, and get a price for what you want without identifying yourself. You will probably find that all the DJ’s in your area are within $100 of each other. Don’t get caught in the "what is your budget" scam with any vendor. Let them quote you a price first.
If you are looking in central NJ/Jersey Shore area, Cisco’s Premier DJs runs at $900… It’s a $100 down payment and $800 on the wedding day. They are great!
