I’m getting married exactly one year after he proposed, so we started preparation aptly away.
Some venues we looked at allowable you to book even 2 years in advance. It really depends on how well loved the place you’d like to have it at is…so I’d say start looking into that soon so you have a lot of options and can see how much money you’d need for exactly the place you want.
After that’s done, I’d say start thinking of some thoughts as far as colors, themes, dresses, cakes,etc..and start seriously alternative things out about a year before.
Also, be sure to go dress shopping at around 8 months in advance. I went in that early, and the marriage consultant was incredibly pleased since most brides only give them a few months to work with. That way you aren’t going to have to worry about needing alterations done and not having enough time to do them
Excellent luck! and congratulations!
You can get plenty of wedding preparation books with timelines to help.
A year in advance is not too soon to book well loved venues and photographers - especially if you plot your wedding in a month that is busy with other activities (June’s huge for weddings, October for birthdays, November owing to New Year’s celebration parties).
You will want to wait no longer than 6-9 months from your date to secure your venue and photographer - your dress and food/beverage preparations can be made within 3-4 months of your date. You want your invitations to go out no less than one month before your wedding - and you will need to order custom invitations about a month in advance of needing them.
On the other hand, if you are not particular about your preparations and are not preparation a large, elaborate wedding, I have helped place together a wedding in about a week with rented outfits and cake made at a grocery store bakery.
Check out theknot.com and weddingwire.com. They both give you a time line of when you should start doing everything. I am preparation mine now and it’s not until 10/2010 (so 14 months in advance)
I got engaged in May of 2008. We are getting married in Sept. 2009. I started preparation (and saving!) aptly away! Book the hall as soon as possible as a lot of times it might not be available on your date later. Don’t let the available dates pick the day you get married. Most of the time you only need a down payment and can make payments on it.
How long it takes to plot a wedding, depends on how huge your wedding is. A smaller wedding, formal or not, will not take as long as a reception with 350 people. Figure out your basics first.. Budget first and foremost. Then figure out the amount of guests, type of wedding/reception you are wanting, and the marriage party and such. Then go from there. I suggest starting early so you have plenty of time to make decisions and check prices! Best of luck!
For my September wedding I started in May. I would urge a longer period even if, because the larger the wedding the more money you have to come up with. Except you’re rich–you may need to budget.
Well I can say this is not the first time I started preparation my wedding. We tried once before but due to a loss of job were unable to get married. This go around I am doing all the preparation well in advance. I want to make a budget and them fin ways to cut costs. I was thinking of 2010 but lately have changed it until 2011. Then I will have more options. I know from talking to different locations that booking early can save money. I was looking at doing everything on a yacht and if i book now i get the prices for aptly now even if they go up before my wedding. To be honest it really does not take long to plot a wedding. If you are a bargain shopper like me it can be time consuming but it can be done in a matter of weeks.
I suggest start serious preparation one year in advance. Certainly start looking at the styles you like. Your tastes will change with the more styles you are exposed to. The key is forming your own. If you do that sort of stuff now, it makes the minor details a small simpler to handle.
We started reserving things at 17 months out. We picked well loved venues/vendors so we started booking them as soon as they allowable it. One thing that was really nice about this was that we got 2008 prices on some things for our 2010 wedding and payments are spread out over more time for some things which certainly helps.
