Here’s an option. The DJ should be able to set up his gear along with the band’s. He could then either stay or go elsewhere ( MOST are going to charge you extra for this - I would NOT!). He MIGHT DJ during band breaks or not as well.
When the band is done he can then start aptly away.
In one wedding I did, there was an accoustic duo who played 3 hours, and I got with them and used MY sound gear (except for mics and such), did the basic set-up and allowable them to adjust it to suit their needs.
Since the wedding couple didn’t really need me there for the band breaks, I went shopping since I was in the "huge city" where I had lots of options.
Again, working together this way can keep the flow going, and a really KIND, UNDERSTANDING DJ will cooperate fully.

well than tell the dj to set up a small bit later and tell the band to go home at a certain time.

I’m assuming here that you’ll have the ceremony and the reception in the same place, or at least very near each other where there’s no clear division.

Doubtless the simplest thing to do would be to have the band play as the guests are arriving, then play "Here comes the bride" (or your choice of entrance music), maybe back up a soloist singing at some top in the ceremony, play the Wedding March as the newly-married couple exits, and finally play quietly while the guests go to the reception area.

If you are having a dinner reception, you could have the band play during dinner, sort of in the background. After dinner you’d have the DJ take over, maybe with karioke.
