It really depends on the type of wedding you are having but I would say that people tend to like going with the flow of things. you sound like you are trying to keep things habitual but its really not like that since you are not using a DJ. I would certainly not place it on mix up. You’ll find out that Murphy’s Law will kick in and anything terrible that could happen will. I would keep a excellent mix on things. Get a few hype songs first to get people motivated because you know its going to take a few to get people out there on the floor. Then every third song make it a slow one and play at least two slow ones at a time.. This way when the girls finally convince the boys to dance with them, there will still be some time to dance. THE FIRST dance, you would make that your first song and then let the dancing start! but before all that make sure you still have background music so its not all silent before the first dance. excellent luck!

Ok I just got married and I was thinking about doing the same thing. Here are the facts–you are going to be so caught up in all the activities that at time you won’t even hear the music that is playing–I’m not kidding. The best advise I can give you is to hire a DJ. Find a cheap one that will play your special made cds. Being your own DJ is one more thing on your list of a million things you’re going to have to do that day. Trust me that entire day from you waking moment to your wedding night is a cyclone and one more thing you can mark off of your list the better.

I agree with RS but I would add that you doubtless know somoene who would be more than willing to be the dj for you. Maybe a 13-15 yr ancient boy who is young enough to be bored at the wedding but ancient enough to follow your instruction??? You might be able to burn 3 or 4 mix discs in a excellent dance order and maybe another 1 or 2 for the ambience during the other times?

Your age groups should determine what music to play.
Have some oldies for the 50-60 age grp
Disco for the 40-60 age grp
Club music for the 30 age grp
Have fun songs where everyone can participate.
    Chicken dance
    Hokey pokey
    Electric slide
    Etc.
Suggest that people make requests for songs.
    Best wishes

Maybe you have a friend that want to do it. Make sure they have a excellent language voice because the DJ is also the emcee. Cake Cut, garter toss, bouquet fling. etc. Best to sit down and go over the format. Get some excellent dance mix CDs. Personally we had a DJ and I would hire one again. It really "made’ the reception.

we didn’t want a cheesy dj for our wedding. Plus you say you need it for a wedding and the price goes up substantially. We made up a huge list of our favorite songs and wedding favorites and place them on an ipod. After 3 or 4 quick songs we place slow tunes for a couple songs. It worked out well. We had 8 hours of music hooked up to a sound system. Everyone danced and had a excellent time. We didn’t have a garter toss, bouquet toss or cheesy chicken dance so it worked out well for us. Hire your teenage cousin to man the ipod. Excellent luck to you.

    Comnget_it,

Congrats on your upcoming wedding! Check out http://www.partymusicwiki.com/ they’ve got a huge list of wedding music and you can preview it directly on their site. It seems like it’s set up for people who want to choose out their own music for a wedding reception. I hope this helps some!

    Regards,
    Anthony
